Oil thieves in the Niger Delta Region of Nigeria are facing increasing pressure as the Air Component of Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) intensifies its crackdown on illicit activities. A recent operation on Saturday, 5th August 2023, targeted thieves extracting crude oil from a pipeline about 4 Nautical Miles South-East of Bille, a riverine area west of Bonny Island and south of Port Harcourt, in Rivers State. Upon sighting three boats involved in the unlawful operation, air strikes were promptly launched, resulting in the destruction of the boats.
Further into the operation, the crew discovered an active illegal refining site with tanks and reservoirs filled with suspected illegally refined products. The site, located roughly 4 miles south-east of Idama in Rivers State, was immediately targeted and annihilated.
This heightened onslaught against economic saboteurs is part of a larger strategy to curb theft and economic sabotage, and it will continue until such illegal activities cease. The Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, has instructed all air component commanders across the country to collaborate with other security agencies in sustaining air strikes against criminal elements.
In his words, “The days of treating criminal elements in our country with kids’ gloves are over. We must continue on this trajectory until we bring all of them to their knees.” This renewed determination to combat oil theft and illegal refining operations signals difficult times ahead for those engaged in these illicit activities
