The grand event took place on the 20th of February, 1978, at the Parisona Hotel in Anthony, Lagos. Amidst the hum of sacred incantations, the blessings of twelve Ifa priests sanctified the ceremony. Despite some parents’ objections, Fela became the husband to these 27 women, in a ceremony attended by his families, friends, and fellow band members.

During the ceremony, Fela made a brief address, pressed naira notes on his brides’ foreheads as a blessing, and presented them with marriage certificates. The unconventional marriage didn’t stop there; Fela embraced a rotation system, spending time with 12 wives at a time. Following the grand wedding, Fela whisked his 27 brides off to Ghana for a communal honeymoon.

However, the unconventional marital arrangement took a turn in 1986. Upon his release from prison, Fela made the surprising announcement of divorcing all his 27 wives, citing marriage as a root cause of jealousy. Despite this, he offered them a home, and some of the women continued to live with him until his death in 1997.
