Daddy Freeze had earlier expressed disapproval of gospel singer Mercy Chinwo’s performance at the event, suggesting that the musical style was inappropriate for the occasion.
Reacting in a detailed Instagram post, Duncan said the ceremony was dedicated solely to celebrating Alex Ekubo’s life and should not be turned into a subject of public criticism or personal opinion.
He explained that although he usually avoids commenting on unrelated issues, he felt compelled to respond due to what he described as a serious misrepresentation of the event.
According to Duncan, the gathering was a “night of tributes” and a service of songs, not a funeral service. He added that hymns were performed multiple times during the event, including a particularly emotional rendition of Blessed Assurance.
He also noted that hymns are not exclusive to any single denomination and questioned assumptions about Ekubo’s religious affiliation.
Duncan further stated that the event included a strong worship component, explaining that members of the late actor’s close circle repeatedly emphasised his love for worship music. In his view, the style of performance reflected what Ekubo would have appreciated.
He also pointed out that Daddy Freeze did not comply with the event’s all-white dress code, as he attended in black attire.
Duncan concluded that the ceremony was not about individual preferences or public opinions, but about honouring the late actor, adding that he hoped his remarks would clarify the situation.
In his words, he described Daddy Freeze’s comments as inappropriate and out of place, insisting that the night should have remained focused on celebrating Ekubo’s memory rather than generating controversy.
