Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called upon President Bola Tinubu to follow the commendable example set by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State. The organization urges President Tinubu to promptly comply with the court’s ruling, which mandates the Federal Government to recover pensions received by former governors. Additionally, SERAP encourages President Tinubu to contest the legality of state pension laws that enable such excessive pension benefits.
In a letter dated 23rd March 2024, signed by SERAP’s Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare, the organization criticizes former President Muhammadu Buhari for his failure to adhere to the court’s decision. It highlights that the non-compliance allows former governors and their deputies, some of whom now hold ministerial or legislative positions, to evade accountability for their actions.
The letter points out specific individuals currently benefiting from double emoluments, including pensions, such as Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso (Kano), Kabiru Gaya (Kano), Theodore Orji (Abia), Abdullahi Adamu (Nasarawa), Sam Egwu (Ebonyi), Shaaba Lafiagi (Kwara), Joshua Dariye (Plateau), and Jonah Jang (Plateau).
SERAP echoes former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism of state pension laws as “acts of daylight robbery” and supports his call for their abolition by other state governors. The organization emphasizes that obeying the court’s judgment is crucial for upholding the rule of law and preserving the integrity of Nigeria’s legal system.
