APGA’s Okwu Predicts Tinubu’s Unchallenged 2027 BidMaxi Okwu, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has stated that President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 is inevitable, given the current state of Nigeria’s electoral management. He argued that Tinubu, as a seasoned politician, knows how to navigate the political landscape to secure a second term. Okwu suggested that anyone who believes Tinubu will lose in 2027 is merely dreaming.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview with DAILY POST, Okwu, who is also a lawyer, shared his thoughts on the recently concluded Edo State governorship election, the political future of Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo, and President Tinubu’s human rights record. He also commented on Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike’s threats against governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), among other issues. Below are excerpts from the interview:
On the Edo State Governorship Election and the Reactions of PDP and Labour Party (LP):
When asked about his assessment of the Edo election, Okwu expressed concern over the lack of confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process. He highlighted how the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has lost credibility among Nigerians, citing the failure of systems like the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Okwu echoed former President Goodluck Jonathan’s view that even with advanced technology, a corrupt individual behind the system can undermine its effectiveness. He criticized the manual vote tabulation that follows the electronic processes, calling it outdated and damaging to the credibility of elections.
On Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Position in APGA and APC’s Plans for Anambra in 2025:
Okwu commented on Soludo’s diminishing influence within APGA and suggested that Soludo might be leaning toward the All Progressives Congress (APC) as an alternative, especially given the party’s efforts to capture Anambra in 2025. He predicted that the APC has the upper hand in future elections and linked this to Tinubu’s strong political position heading into 2027.
On Tinubu’s Chances of Re-election in 2027:
Okwu expressed little doubt about Tinubu’s chances for re-election, citing his complete lack of faith in INEC and the political system. According to Okwu, Tinubu is the first “true politician” to reach the presidency and is well-versed in securing political victories. He believes Tinubu will be difficult to defeat in 2027.
On Human Rights Under President Tinubu’s Administration:
Okwu voiced disappointment with the human rights record under Tinubu, especially given the president’s pro-democracy background. He pointed out several concerning incidents, including the arrest of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and the invasion of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) office. He expressed frustration at the lack of widespread protests, particularly in comparison to the 2014 demonstrations against former President Goodluck Jonathan.
On Minister Nyesom Wike’s Threats to PDP Governors:
Okwu described Wike as a “rogue element” within the PDP and questioned how the party allowed him to maintain such influence. He expressed disappointment in the PDP for not playing its opposition role effectively and for allowing Wike to disrupt the party from within while simultaneously aligning with the APC.
On Nigeria’s Rising Suicide Rates:
Okwu criticized the Federal Government for expressing alarm over rising suicide rates, arguing that the government is responsible for creating a livable environment. He linked the increase in suicides to the harsh economic conditions and the government’s failure to address the welfare of the people. Okwu also pointed out the deteriorating value of the Naira and the high cost of living, which has driven many Nigerians to desperation.
On Farmer-Herder Clashes and Jega’s Recommendations:
Okwu rejected open grazing as a solution to farmer-herder clashes, calling it an outdated practice. He attributed the escalation of the conflict to the proliferation of arms among herders, a situation that worsened under the Buhari administration. Okwu emphasized the need for a security overhaul, advocating for localizing security efforts and creating a level playing field in terms of access to weapons for all communities.
In conclusion, Okwu expressed disillusionment with the current state of Nigerian politics, the electoral process, and governance. He remains skeptical about the possibility of meaningful change under the current system.
