The controversial issue of President Tinubu’s academic credentials from Chicago State University (CSU) has been speculated by many to have been spurred by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. This is perceived as an attempt to challenge Tinubu’s victory in court. CONTINUE READING

Temitope Ajayi, the SSA to President Tinubu on Media and Publicity, reacted sharply to these allegations. He stated, “For me, the issue isn’t whether President Tinubu graduated from Chicago State University or not. The crux is that the former Vice President Atiku is not a decent man. It’s outrageous to subject a friend, particularly someone like Tinubu who has previously supported Atiku immensely, to such levels of assault and indignity just because of the earthly position and power contention.”

He continued, “We’re discussing a Tinubu that went above and beyond for Atiku in the past. Remember when Atiku faced severe challenges and was metaphorically beaten by rain and left exposed by President Obasanjo and his PDP party in 2007? It was Tinubu who offered him shelter and support.”

Recounting their history, Ajayi added, “Let’s not forget the numerous times Tinubu stood by Atiku when he faced issues with Obasanjo.” CONTINUE READING

Throwback: When Tinubu Stood by Atiku

The rift between Olusegun Obasanjo and his Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, during their tenure (1999-2007) in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic is quite storied and multifaceted. Here’s a brief overview:

  1. Power Struggle and 2003 Elections: The initial disagreement reportedly began when both Obasanjo and Atiku were seeking re-election in 2003. There were reports that Atiku wanted to contest for the presidency, and this allegedly didn’t sit well with Obasanjo. The rift deepened when Atiku was accused of creating a parallel campaign structure, different from Obasanjo’s. However, they managed to reconcile temporarily for the elections and won.
  2. Constitutional Amendment: The political divide between the two became more public during the alleged attempt by President Obasanjo to amend the constitution for a third-term bid. Atiku was perceived to have played a significant role in rallying opposition against the amendment, which ultimately failed.
  3. Corruption Allegations: During their second term, allegations of corruption were leveled against Atiku. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigated him, and he faced charges related to purported money laundering and diverting public funds to private enterprises.
  4. Party Politics: The crisis deepened with the creation of a new political group, known as the “New PDP”, which had the intention of countering Obasanjo’s influence in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Atiku was seen as a leading figure in this group.

Tinubu’s Role: Bola Ahmed Tinubu, then Governor of Lagos State and a key figure in the opposition party, the Action Congress (AC), played a supportive role to Atiku during the height of his disagreement with Obasanjo.

  1. Political Shelter: When Atiku fell out with Obasanjo and the PDP, he sought refuge in the Action Congress (AC). With the backing of Tinubu and other AC stalwarts, Atiku even became the party’s presidential candidate in the 2007 elections.
  2. Alliance Building: Tinubu, being a leading opposition figure against the PDP, saw an opportunity in Atiku’s disagreement with Obasanjo. Both politicians worked together during this period to challenge the dominant PDP.

In essence, Tinubu provided Atiku with political support and a platform during one of the most challenging periods of his political career. However, this alliance was short-lived as Atiku eventually returned to the PDP.

A man of Tinubu’s stature, who served with renowned firms like ExxonMobil and Deloitte, took the helm as a senator and further ascended as a two-term Governor, all under the scrutinizing gaze of Obasanjo, invites questions. Given Obasanjo’s track record of removing governors via judiciary routes and his alleged involvement in the kidnapping saga of then Anambra State Governor, Chris Ngige, it’s thought-provoking. Why, amidst all adversities and political chess moves, was Tinubu left untouched? Moreover, would such esteemed foreign entities have opened their doors for Tinubu if there was even a hint of academic impropriety?.
