Despite the recent threats of a crackdown on bandits and terrorists involved in the abduction of schoolchildren, it appears that these warnings have had little impact. In a distressing development, 15 pupils from an Islamiya school in Sokoto State were kidnapped in the early hours of Saturday, adding to the alarming trend of attacks on educational institutions.
This incident follows the abduction of 287 schoolchildren in Kaduna State just two days prior, and on Wednesday, over 200 Internally Displaced Persons were kidnapped from their camp in Borno State. In response to these escalating incidents, President Bola Tinubu has directed security agents to take immediate action to rescue all those who have been abducted.
The Sokoto State Police Command has officially confirmed the abduction of the 15 Almajiri students in the Gada Local Government Area. According to ASP Ahmed Rufai, the spokesperson for the command, the suspected bandits raided the community around midnight.
Rufai stated, “They reportedly invaded the community in the middle of the night and abducted 15 students of the Islamiya School. They also abducted one woman, who is a resident of the community.” The Commissioner of Police, Ali Kaigama, has mandated the Divisional Police Officer in the community to collaborate with a special team from the state capital to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted students.
Mallam Liman Abubakar, the proprietor of the school, confirmed the incident, saying, “So far, 15 students are unaccounted for, but we are still counting.” Abubakar revealed that the bandits invaded the town around 1 am, injuring one person and abducting a woman during the process. The students were taken as the bandits left the town, and efforts are underway to locate and rescue them.
A resident of the affected community, Mansur Ahmadu, described the gravity of the situation, explaining, “It was a serious situation as they killed a woman in the process before they abducted those students.” This attack adds to the ongoing security challenges faced by communities, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the menace of banditry and terrorism in the region.
