The directive came through a statement signed by Muhammed Ishivaku Sheikh, the general secretary of the National Union of Banks, Insurance, and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE).Sheikh emphasized that the strike aims to pressure the federal government into agreeing on a new national minimum wage and passing it into law promptly. Additionally, it seeks to reverse the recent electricity tariff increase.
NUBIFIE has urged complete adherence to the strike, which commenced on Monday, June 3, 2024.The statement reads: “This notice is to inform all NUBIFIE units that the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its affiliates to initiate an indefinite strike starting Monday, June 3, 2024.
The purpose of the strike is to compel the Federal Government to:Agree on a new national minimum wage and enact it into law before the end of this month, as previously communicated.
Roll back the electricity tariff hike, reducing it from N225/kwh to N66/kwh, in compliance with legal stakeholder consultation requirements.Cease the discriminatory categorization of Nigerian electricity into Bands.
“In full compliance with the Nigeria Labour Congress directives, you are hereby instructed to mobilize for active participation within your respective Zonal Councils/Domestic Committees.
Ensure complete compliance!”However, some bank branches reportedly did not adhere to the directive, with employees observed at their workstations serving customers.
Meanwhile, it was reported that Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) members allegedly disrupted operations at a Polaris Bank branch in Lagos on Monday, enforcing the strike action declared earlier by the labor union.
