The eight-member gang—comprising six men and two women—was presented to the public on Thursday by Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Francis Idu, alongside Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Adedapo Amao.

The suspects, now in DSS custody, reportedly confessed during the parade to orchestrating and executing the kidnapping.

One of the prime suspects, Justice Brodrick from Ozobo in Delta State, admitted that he was recruited by a man he referred to as “his boss.”

Speaking to journalists, Brodrick said: “He called me on June 21 and asked me to come to Yenagoa. He also invited John Uzi, who is here with me. I brought along my younger brother, Kelvin Olu.”

Upon arriving in Bayelsa, the group was allegedly given uniforms and a vehicle for the mission. According to Brodrick, their target wasn’t predetermined—they were merely on patrol when they spotted the judge at Kilimanjaro, a popular eatery.

“We didn’t know he was a judge at the time,” he claimed. “We just saw him and carried out the operation, taking him to our camp.”

Once the gang discovered that their victim hailed from Ekeremor Local Government Area and was of Ijaw descent, they said their leader, known as “General,” ordered that he be handcuffed but treated respectfully.

Another suspect, John, said he wasn’t part of the abduction team due to illness but was at the hideout when the judge was brought in.

Governor Douye Diri had previously announced at the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday that all members of the gang, except the ringleader, had been arrested.

Commissioner Idu praised the joint effort between the police and DSS, noting that a special team was dispatched from Abuja and that the state’s surveillance systems, including strategically placed CCTV cameras, were vital in cracking the case.

“This successful operation is a direct result of Governor Diri’s security strategy, which emphasizes agency collaboration,” Idu said. “Bayelsa is no longer a safe haven for criminals.”
