Behind The Crown: Olubadan-Designate Reveals Secret Fueling Alaafin, Ooni Rivalry
The Olubadan-designate, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, has attributed recurring rivalries among Yoruba monarchs to their followers, whom he accused of stoking discord with conflicting historical narratives.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Thursday while receiving the Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, and his wife on a courtesy visit, Ladoja dismissed the notion of any supremacy contest between the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade. He stressed that disagreements are largely rooted in how supporters defend different accounts of history.
“I have always maintained that neither the Ooni nor the Alaafin is responsible for disunity. Their supporters, in trying to defend their preferred histories, create unnecessary conflict, forgetting that history itself can be subjective,” the Olubadan-designate said.
He urged the Yoruba to rise above divisive debates and embrace peace, unity, and progress. Drawing a comparison, he noted: “The Alaafin cannot rule in Ile-Ife, and the Ooni cannot rule in Oyo. Every monarch has his own domain. Just as Britain once colonised America, today both are strong allies. That is how Yoruba monarchs must see themselves.”
Reflecting on Ibadan’s historical role, Oba Ladoja added that without Ibadan’s influence, some Yoruba rulers might have been reduced to bearing titles like Emir. He called for modernising Ibadanland and strengthening the legacy of the Ibadan Empire rather than dwelling only on historical rivalries.
