A middle-aged man was electrocuted early Tuesday morning, September 3, 2024, while reportedly trying to vandalize a transformer and associated cables owned by the Jos Electricity Distribution Company (JED). The incident took place near Queens Hotel in Ankpa Ward, Makurdi, the capital of Benue State.
Residents were shocked to find the man’s lifeless body suspended between two poles that connect the transformer cables. According to local resident Terkula, the suspect likely seized the opportunity during a power outage, but was electrocuted when power was unexpectedly restored.
“We woke up around 5 a.m. to find that electricity had been reconnected in several nearby areas. A few neighbors went to check the transformer and discovered that all cables and equipment had been stripped away, leaving only the body hanging on the pole. We immediately notified the ‘D’ Division police station, and they arrived to remove the body,” Terkula explained.
Dr. Adakole Elijah, Head of Corporate Communications at JED, condemned the act of vandalism, emphasizing the company’s struggle to protect its assets despite heightened security measures. “It is nearly impossible for us to guard these facilities alone. We urge communities to take responsibility for the electrical infrastructure in their areas, as they are the ultimate beneficiaries,” Elijah said.
He further noted, “Vandalism leads to significant financial loss and disrupts services, only for the facilities to be targeted again. Communities benefit from these services, and their safety and economic stability are at risk when facilities are destroyed. We call on local police and vigilantes to help secure these assets.”
State Police Command spokesperson, SP Catherine Anene, confirmed the incident, stating, “I am aware of the electrocution in Wadata involving an individual trying to vandalize a transformer. We have received a report about this.”
