The outage has affected states such as Kaduna, Kano, Jigawa, Benue, Katsina, Taraba, Gombe, and parts of Borno and Nasarawa. This latest incident follows a series of previous collapses, with the most recent one happening just days earlier.

The recurring grid failures have raised serious concerns about the reliability of Nigeria’s power infrastructure. Olubiyo has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in the power sector, expressing frustration over the persistent issues. He stated, ā€œThe current widespread darkness affecting about 11 Northern States is nothing short of a global embarrassment.ā€

While Nigerian authorities have not officially confirmed the recent grid collapse, earlier reports from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Transmission Company of Nigeria indicated that Saturday’s failure was caused by an explosion of a current transformer at the Jebba transmission station around 8:15 am.
