Two wood merchants, Ahohe Seido and an individual known only as Dogbon, are currently missing after the boat they were on capsized in the Gbòde Jedo River in Odofin, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident occurred around 7:00 am on Thursday, September 12, 2024, as the merchants and others were transporting firewood from their village to Benin Republic for sale.

Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the event, explaining that the boat capsized due to a sudden storm.

“A report was filed at the Ipokia Division on September 12, 2024, at about 7:00 a.m. by two individuals, Awhanse Jimoh and Ahohe Jimoh, both wood merchants from Ilepa Village in Ipokia,” stated Odutola.

“They reported that Ahohe Seido and another person, Dogbon, were among those transporting firewood on the Gbodo Jego River towards Benin Republic when a strong current overturned the boat. Everyone aboard was thrown into the water, and despite rescue attempts, only two individuals were rescued.”

Unfortunately, Ahohe Seido and Dogbon did not survive the accident. Despite extensive search efforts by divers, their bodies have not yet been recovered.

Community divers are actively engaged in ongoing search and rescue operations.

An investigation into the incident is underway to verify the details and statements provided by the survivors.

Police Commissioner Abiodun Alamutu has been informed of the situation and emphasizes the importance of wearing life jackets, especially with the return of the rainy season, to reduce such risks.
