Former Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung, has stated that addressing the ongoing attacks by suspected herdsmen requires a sincere and honest approach from the government.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to reports, Dalung described the recent massacre of over 52 residents in Bokkos, Plateau State, not as a herders-farmers clash, but as outright genocide.

Speaking in an interview with Arise News on Monday, the Plateau State-born politician stressed that the perpetrators must be officially designated as terrorists.

“If we are to be honest about the situation in Plateau, we must stop pretending it is a herders-farmers clash. It is not. What is happening is terrorism—genocide—because it fits the international definition of genocide. When one group targets another with the intention of extermination, that’s genocide. When starvation or similar strategies are used to wipe out communities, that’s genocide,” Dalung said.

He further urged the federal government to stop framing the attacks in ethnic terms and to classify the assailants for what they are—criminals.

“The federal government must call them what they are—terrorists—not tie them to an ethnic identity. Though many may belong to a particular ethnic group, they do not represent that group’s interests. These are criminals, and until we start treating them as such, we will keep missing the mark. Government officials will keep visiting Plateau and claiming to be ‘on top of the situation,’ while the criminals actually remain in control.”

Dalung also dismissed the newly proposed Ministry of Livestock as ineffective in tackling the crisis.

“Let’s stop deceiving ourselves with this Ministry of Livestock idea. It cannot solve this problem,” he said.

He explained that during the attack in Bokkos, there was no evidence of animals being stolen or farms being encroached upon, proving that the violence had no connection to livestock-related disputes.

“The herders did not invade farms. They invaded communities and carried out killings and destruction. If we analyze this carefully, it comes down to a lack of political will. If there was genuine political resolve to act, the attackers would be properly identified and dealt with as terrorists. These are not clashes—they are targeted attacks without provocation,” Dalung added.
