The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, expressed deep concern over the ongoing trend where developing nations like Nigeria continually lose their highly skilled health professionals to developed countries that haven’t invested in their initial professional education. Under the theme “All for Health, Health for All,” the 77th WHA, held from May 27 to June 1, 2024, resonates with Nigeria’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative. This initiative aims to save lives, alleviate suffering, and ensure health for all Nigerians.

Prof Pate emphasized that the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored vulnerabilities in health systems globally, urging countries to reassess the nexus between health access and social justice. He urged for renewed commitment to political will, global solidarity, and addressing global inequities post-pandemic.

Highlighting the pervasive health poverty faced by half of the world’s population, Prof Pate stressed the fragility of progress in combating diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria. He lamented the brain drain of skilled health professionals from countries like Nigeria to developed nations and called for a reevaluation of the global health compact.

In Nigeria, efforts are underway to rebuild the national health system, improve governance, strengthen public health capacities, and enhance healthcare value chains. Prof Pate urged international health partners to align with Nigeria’s commitments and prioritize sustainable national systems.

He emphasized the integral role of a robust Nigerian health system in regional and global health security, calling for collective action towards a safer, healthier, and more equitable world. Prof Pate concluded by urging delegates to move beyond slogans and translate shared vision into tangible actions for universal health coverage
