Alison-Madueke, 65, faces five charges of accepting bribes and one count of conspiracy to commit bribery, alleged to have occurred during her tenure as Nigeria’s oil minister from 2010 to 2015.
Prosecutors claim the former minister received “financial or other advantages” from individuals linked to two energy companies between 2011 and 2015 in exchange for improperly performing her official duties.
The alleged perks reportedly included the refurbishment of luxury properties in London, payment of staff salaries at these properties, expensive furniture, chauffeur-driven cars, private jet flights to Nigeria, and £100,000 (around $137,000) in cash.
Court documents also allege that Alison-Madueke accepted bribes in the form of her son’s school fees, luxury items from high-end stores like Harrods and Louis Vuitton, and additional private jet trips.
According to the indictment, these benefits amounted to the “improper performance” of her ministerial responsibilities.
Alison-Madueke appeared in a London court last week for preliminary hearings addressing technical legal matters and jury selection but did not enter a plea. The full trial, set to be heard in a UK court, is expected to last 10 to 12 weeks.
The former minister has consistently denied any wrongdoing, while both Nigerian and international anti-corruption agencies have pursued multiple investigations into her tenure.
