Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja issued the remand order, directing that Malami be held alongside his co-defendants — his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and an associate, Bashir Asabe — pending the hearing and determination of their bail applications.
Malami and the other defendants are facing trial after being arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on a 16-count charge bordering on money laundering. All the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the allegations.
After listening to submissions from defence counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), and the prosecution, led by Ekele Iheneacho (SAN), the court adjourned the matter to January 2, 2026, for the hearing of the bail application.
In the charge marked FHC/ABJ/CR/700/2025, the EFCC accused Malami, Bashir Asabe and Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami of violating provisions of the Money Laundering Act in transactions involving several billions of naira.
One of the counts alleges that Malami and his son used Metropolitan Auto Tech Limited to conceal the illicit origin of ₦1,014,848,500 lodged in a Sterling Bank account. Another count accuses the former justice minister of acquiring multiple properties, including residential and commercial assets in Abuja, Kebbi and Kano states, as well as large parcels of land, with funds allegedly linked to unlawful activities.
The anti-graft agency maintains that the assets listed in the charge were purchased with proceeds of crime.
