IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, has called upon the people of the Southeast to abstain from participating in the Independence Day celebrations within the region.

Powerful argued that the Nigerian state has shown hostility towards the Igbo people and has consistently denied their quest for equal treatment.

In a statement signed by Powerful, IPOB urged state governors and political leaders in the Southeast to boycott the October 1st independence day festivities.

An excerpt from the statement reads: “The global family and movement of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), under the leadership of Supreme Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, hereby call on Biafrans both at home and in the diaspora to refrain from participating in Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration on October 1st, 2023.”

“It is imperative for every rational Biafran citizen to recognize that Nigeria harbors antipathy towards Biafrans, particularly the Igbo.

Nigeria has consistently rebuffed our demands for equal citizenship. Biafrans have endured political and economic marginalization within Nigeria. Given Nigeria’s rejection of us, we have equally disavowed Nigeria and its celebrations.”

“As the Nigerian government plans to commemorate its independence from Britain, we strongly advise the governors and political leaders of the Eastern Region to abstain from participating in the October 1st Independence Day celebration in our territory.

Furthermore, we encourage Biafrans to refrain from attending any Independence Day celebration within or outside Biafra.”

“As a result, IPOB has instituted a ban on Independence Day celebrations and the display of Nigerian flags anywhere in Biafraland on October 1st, 2023.”
