The blasts, which caused widespread panic, were reported at key locations in the city, including the entrance of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Monday Market, and the Post Office area.

According to NEMA’s Zonal Coordinator, Surajo Abdullahi, a total of 169 victims were evacuated to different hospitals across the metropolis for medical attention.

Emergency responders and security agencies reportedly worked throughout the night to rescue victims and secure the affected areas.

Many residents, who have endured years of insurgency-related violence, expressed shock over the incident. Some described the explosions as a painful reminder of earlier years marked by frequent attacks in the city.

One resident, speaking anonymously, told Daily Trust that the blasts revived memories of past fears and tragic scenes, noting that the incident signals a worrying rise in violence in a city that had enjoyed relative calm in recent years.

The last significant attack in Maiduguri occurred in 2021, when mortar fire reportedly killed at least 10 people. That was followed by a suicide bombing at a mosque in the Gambarou market area, heightening security concerns at the time.

The recent explosions have renewed fears of a possible resurgence of insecurity in the region.

In response, the Borno State Police Command stated that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit had been deployed to conduct assessment and clearance operations in the affected locations. Police spokesperson Nahum Kenneth Daso confirmed that joint security teams and emergency responders were managing the situation and urged residents to remain calm while investigations continue.

The blasts occurred less than 24 hours after suspected insurgents allegedly attacked a military facility in Ajilari, on the outskirts of Maiduguri. The back-to-back incidents have deepened concern and uncertainty among residents.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and further updates will be released as more information becomes available.
