The collapse, which occurred on June 3, 2024, trapped numerous laborers at a site operated by African Minerals and Logistics Limited.

Mallam Umar Aliyu, the District Head of Galadima-Kogo, confirmed the recovery of the bodies on Wednesday. They have been transported to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) Specialist Hospital mortuary in Minna.

Aliyu reported that two of the deceased, both Muslims, will be buried on Friday at the Palace of the Emir of Minna. The remaining two victims, who were Christians, will be sent back to their hometowns in Nasarawa State as per their families’ wishes.

“To date, we have recovered four more bodies from the collapsed mining pit. Two will be interred at the Emir’s Palace, while the other two will be returned to Nasarawa State and Zumba for burial,” Aliyu said.

The total number of bodies recovered from the site now stands at 14. Aliyu expressed concern for the affected families, highlighting the trauma experienced by many, especially the widows.

“The community is assisting the families, particularly the wives and children, who are still grappling with the shock of their loss. The company manager has also provided N200,000 to each family,” Aliyu added.

He noted the severe impact on the victims’ children, many of whom have been forced to leave school due to the loss of their fathers, who were their primary providers.

The Niger State Government has reportedly set up a committee to distribute N50 million in aid to the victims’ families.
