Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, the Senate Majority Leader, has unveiled the Federal Government’s plans to crack down on economic saboteurs starting next year, targeting those responsible for making life challenging for Nigerians. During a press session in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, on Monday, Bamidele emphasized the urgency of passing the 2024 Appropriations Bill on December 30 to maintain the January-December budget cycle, prompting federal lawmakers to curtail their holidays for a swift legislative process….CONTINUE READING
Expressing serious concerns about economic saboteurs manipulating exchange rates and restricting access to the naira, Bamidele announced the government’s commitment to prosecuting those responsible for economic sabotage. He outlined the government’s determination to go after those who hoarded currency, influencing commodity prices, and individuals engaged in speculation.
Bamidele also disclosed the Federal Government’s significant investment plans in agriculture and agro-allied industries, emphasizing a strategic focus on harnessing solid mineral potential alongside revenue from crude oil sales. Addressing the 2024 Appropriation Bill, he assured that the National Assembly would expedite the budget approval process, with all relevant ministries, departments, and agencies appearing before joint committees to streamline proceedings.
To meet the December 30 deadline for passing the budget, Bamidele highlighted the Assembly’s efforts to reduce time by consolidating the budget defense process and conducting weekend sessions. He underscored the commitment to reconvene on December 29, aiming to have the 2024 appropriation bill on the President’s desk for assent by January 1, 2024.
Regarding the removal of fuel subsidy, Bamidele defended the government’s decision, stating that ending the subsidy was a necessary move. He acknowledged the opposition from those who benefited from the subsidy, noting their efforts to push up the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit. Bamidele attributed these challenges to Nigeria’s status as a consumer economy with limited domestic production capabilities.
