Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has revealed that the Nigerian Government is currently offering refuge and international protection to approximately 100,000 refugees, alongside supporting over 8,500,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

 

 

 

This disclosure took place during the Global Refugees Forum at Palexpo Geneva, Switzerland, where the minister presented Nigeria’s position paper. The forum aimed to address global migration, refugee challenges, and sustainable solutions, bringing together UN agencies, humanitarian organizations, NGOs, refugee-led groups, and faith-based organizations.

Dr. Edu emphasized Nigeria’s empathetic understanding of the formidable difficulties faced by refugees and committed the nation to tangible pledges. These commitments encompass financial and material contributions, technical and policy support, and collaborative efforts to find enduring solutions for the millions of refugees globally who have been compelled to leave their original homes.

In her statement, the minister highlighted Nigeria’s generosity in opening its borders and hearts to those in desperate need of international protection. The Federal Government’s pledges include incorporating refugees, IDPs, returnees, and their host communities into national development plans. Additionally, efforts will be made to strengthen protection capacity, ensure access to durable solutions, and actively participate in regional and sub-regional initiatives to address the root causes of displacement.
