Sergeant Akhere successfully apprehended a notorious cultist known as ‘Raggae’ during the operation. Shockingly, without apparent cause, Inspector Okouromi allegedly lifted his gun and fatally shot Sergeant Akhere from behind. The injured officer was swiftly taken to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead by the attending doctor.
Eyewitnesses revealed that Inspector Okouromi, realizing the gravity of his actions, immediately fled the scene with his firearm. The arrested cult suspect, ‘Raggae,’ also managed to escape, while another individual, Mr. Agbontaen Monday, a member of the Eiye confraternity, was successfully apprehended.
As authorities intensify efforts to locate Inspector Okouromi, who is currently being sought by the police in the Ugbowo division, the deceased police sergeant’s body has been placed in the mortuary. The investigation is ongoing, with the police determined to uncover the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
It’s worth noting that a similar incident occurred in Rivers State the previous week when Inspector Nelson Abuante mistakenly shot and killed Inspector Monday Gbaramana during an attempt to arrest a suspect. Inspector Abuante subsequently took his own life. The recent events highlight the complexities and risks faced by law enforcement officers during operations.
