Peter Obi Calls for Clarity and Price Reduction Following Port Harcourt Refinery Restart
Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has urged the federal government to offer greater transparency and accountability in the management of Nigeria’s oil resources. Reacting to the recent restart of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery, Obi expressed hope that Nigerians would soon see tangible benefits, including a reduction in pump prices and an improvement in the economy.
In a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Obi acknowledged the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) for revamping the old refinery but emphasized that the public now expects to see a reduction in fuel prices as a result of the refinery’s operation.
IPMAN: NNPCL Trucks Only Currently Loading Petrol at Port Harcourt Refinery
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPCL) confirmed on Tuesday that operations had resumed at the Port Harcourt Refinery, marking a significant step towards Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in petroleum refining. NNPCL stated that the revamped refinery has the capacity to produce 60,000 barrels of oil per day, describing the restart as a major milestone.
However, Abubakar Maigandi, Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), raised concerns about the refinery’s operations, noting that, at the moment, only NNPCL trucks are loading petrol from the facility. He told Daily Trust that IPMAN members have not been invited to load products from the refinery yet and that they are still sourcing products from the Dangote Refinery.
While the situation remains fluid, Maigandi and other marketers are hopeful that as more operators are allowed to participate in loading petrol from the refinery, competition will increase, potentially driving prices down.
Speculation on Petrol Price Drop as Port Harcourt Refinery Resumes Production
The resumption of operations at the Port Harcourt Refinery has sparked optimism among petroleum marketers, who believe it could lead to reduced petrol prices in the coming months. The refinery’s restart follows 11 months of mechanical completion, with the facility now processing crude oil and distributing petrol to the market.
Reports indicate that, on Thursday, about 100 trucks lined up to load petrol from the refinery. NNPCL has confirmed that it is now supplying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO or diesel), and Household Kerosene (HHK) from the refinery, signaling a new phase in Nigeria’s quest for energy independence.
NNPCL Group CEO Mele Kyari described the restart as a “monumental achievement for Nigeria” and a sign of the country’s progress toward refining self-sufficiency. While there has been no immediate change in petrol prices, industry experts expect the increase in supply from the refinery will eventually result in more competitive pricing and better product availability.
In summary, while Nigerians continue to face challenges with rising petrol prices and supply shortages, the restart of the Port Harcourt Refinery offers hope that the country’s fuel supply situation may improve in the near future, potentially leading to lower fuel prices.
