Survivors attribute the attacks to Fulani herders, who, they claim, were responsible for the violence. The death toll may rise as many individuals remain unaccounted for. The affected communities have not only suffered a loss of lives but also witnessed the destruction of property worth millions of naira, leading to the displacement of hundreds of residents.
Israel James, a resident of the Lunghai community in Bokkos LGA, expressed the magnitude of the tragedy, stating, “Our village has been completely razed down by Fulani; my uncle, known by everyone as Baba Pray, was murdered in the church, and the village has been deserted.”
As authorities grapple with the aftermath, DSP Alfred Alabo, the Spokesman of the State Police Command, assured the public that investigations and monitoring efforts are ongoing. The Commissioner of Police for Plateau State, CP Okoro Alawari, conveyed condolences to the affected families, expressing grief over the heinous attacks.
Providing details on the incidents, DSP Alfred Alabo revealed, “On the 24/12/2023 at 2200 hrs, the following 12 villages in Bokkos LGA were attacked: Ndun, Ngyong, Murfet, Makundary, Tamiso, Chiang, Tahore, Gawarba, Dares, Meyenga, Darwat, and Butura Kampani. Similarly, on 24/12/2023 at about 2245 hrs, three villages in Barkin Ladi LGA, namely NTV, Hurum, and Darawat, were also attacked.”
In response to the escalating crisis, the Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations to relocate to Bokkos LGA. A high-powered delegation of well-armed operational forces has been deployed to the affected areas to prevent further attacks and assess the extent of damages.
Initial findings from the assessment in Bokkos LGA indicate that 12 villages were attacked, resulting in the destruction of 221 houses, the burning of 27 motorcycles, and eight motor vehicles. The death toll stands at over 79 persons, with an additional 17 deaths recorded in Barkin Ladi LGA. Investigations and monitoring of the incidents are ongoing, with updates expected as new information emerges.
