The two officers, assigned to the Taabaa Division, had ventured to Nyogor-Lueku to apprehend Mr. Akere Akpobari, who faced allegations from his mother. The attempted arrest escalated into a confrontation when Akere resisted, resulting in a scuffle between him and the two inspectors.
“In the course of the altercation, Inspector Nelson Abuante mistakenly shot Gbaramana, and he sustained serious injuries. Abuante and Akere’s mother attempted to rush the injured officer to the hospital,” a source reported. However, the situation took a tragic turn when the vehicle transporting them ran out of fuel, and Inspector Monday succumbed to his injuries during the journey.
Upon discovering the death of his colleague, Abuante, overwhelmed by grief and possibly guilt, made the fateful decision to take his own life, using his firearm. The bodies of both officers have been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Rivers, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were underway to understand the sequence of events. “Yes, the incident happened. We are investigating to unravel what really happened,” she conveyed in a brief statement.
