President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially established a 37-member Tripartite Committee tasked with devising a new National Minimum Wage. Vice President Kashim Shettima inaugurated the committee on behalf of the President, who is currently on a private visit to France. Prior to the inauguration, Vice President Shettima urged committee members to engage in collective bargaining to formulate a mutually acceptable recommendation for a new wage policy. The committee boasts members from various sectors, including Hon. Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, Minister of State, Labour and Employment, representing the Hon. Minister of Labour and Employment, and Mr. Wale Edun, Minister of Finance & Coordinating Minister of the Economy.
Representatives from State Governments include governors such as Alh. Mohammed Umar Bago (Niger State), Sen. Bala Mohammed (Bauchi State), Alh. Umar Dikko Radda (Katsina State), Prof. Charles Soludo (Anambra State), Sen. Ademola Adeleke (Osun State), and Mr. Otu Bassey Edet (Cross River State).
Members from organizations such as the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), National Association of Small and Medium Enterprise (NASME), and Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) were also appointed.
Organised labour is represented by individuals from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), including Comrade Joe Ajaero, President, NLC; Comrade Festus Osifo, President, TUC; and other distinguished leaders.
Vice President Shettima emphasized the urgency of the committee’s task, urging them to promptly deliver their recommendations.
