According to a report by The New Humanitarian, roughly 200 additional fighters went missing in the week following the operation. The strikes were carried out in coordination with Nigerian authorities and involved Tomahawk missiles launched from a U.S. Navy destroyer stationed in the Gulf of Guinea.
The missiles targeted three local government areas – Isa, Tangaza, and Tambuwal – although Tangaza is widely recognized as the Lakurawa group’s main operational hub. While Tambuwal is not typically linked to organized armed violence, Isa is known as a stronghold dominated by bandit leader Bello Turji. Details regarding the Isa strike remain unclear, and Turji is believed to have survived the operation.
Tangaza suffered the heaviest losses after what appeared to be a two-stage missile attack. The first missile reportedly killed around 30 fighters. As survivors regrouped to tend to the wounded, a second missile struck, killing those who had gathered. In total, an estimated 155 Lakurawa fighters were killed, including 19 who initially survived but later succumbed to their injuries.
A senior Lakurawa commander, Dando Sibu, reportedly escaped the attack by leaving the area just minutes before the second strike. In the aftermath, around 200 fighters were reported missing, and the group also lost nearly half of its cattle, a major source of revenue.
Despite these losses, the Lakurawa carried out a retaliatory attack on Birnin Yauri in Kebbi State on December 31, 2025. The raid, which lasted several hours, reportedly killed at least 21 civilians, nine of whom were beheaded.
The report emphasized that the U.S. strikes specifically targeted the Lakurawa group and did not affect other jihadist organizations operating in Nigeria, including Boko Haram and the al-Qaeda-affiliated Ansaru.
