The announcement was made during a press briefing on Sunday by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, represented by Segun Tomori.

According to the statement, the decision to end the mining ban was prompted by significant improvements in the region’s security situation. Alake highlighted the potential economic benefits of resuming mining operations in Zamfara, a state rich in gold, lithium, and copper.

He noted that while the initial ban aimed to curb insecurity, it inadvertently allowed illegal mining to thrive, leading to the loss of valuable national resources.

“The security challenges that necessitated the 2019 ban have considerably reduced due to the strides made by security forces. With the ban lifted, Zamfara’s mining sector can now begin contributing to national revenue,” Alake stated.

He commended the Tinubu administration’s intelligence-led security efforts, which he said had neutralized key bandit commanders, including the recent capture of notorious leader Halilu Sububu in Zamfara.

The minister further emphasized that lifting the ban would enable better regulation of mining activities, improve intelligence gathering to combat illegal operations, and ensure the country reaps the benefits of Zamfara’s mineral wealth.

Addressing recent concerns over the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with France, Alake clarified that the agreement focuses on training and capacity building for Nigerian mining professionals. He stressed that the deal does not involve ceding control of mineral resources or entering into a military pact with France.

“We’ve signed similar agreements with Germany and Australia. These partnerships are crucial for enhancing technical and financial capacity in the sector,” Alake concluded, urging stakeholders to refrain from spreading misinformation.
