Cabinet Shakeup: A Missed Chance For Real ReformAfter much speculation, President Bola Tinubu has returned from London to announce a cabinet reshuffle. Unfortunately, this reshuffle does not meet the expectations of the public. It appears to lack a rigorous merit-based assessment and strategic cost-cutting measures, which are vital for a country grappling with significant debt. As a result, this cabinet change may not deliver the hoped-for improvements and leaves a disappointing impression for those seeking substantial reforms in light of the government’s underwhelming performance.

Following the 19th meeting of the Federal Executive Council, the Presidency announced several actions, including merging newly approved regional development commissions with the existing Ministry of Niger Delta Development into the new Ministry of Regional Development. The Ministry of Sports Development was integrated into the National Sports Commission, and the Federal Ministry of Tourism and the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture were combined into the Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy. Alongside these changes, two new appointments were made: Sunday Dare as Special Adviser on Public Communication and Orientation and Shehu Dikko as Chairman of the National Sports Commission.

The reshuffle included ten redesignated ministerial portfolios, the dismissal of five ministers, and the appointment of seven new ministers pending Senate approval. Notably, Uju-Ken Ohanenye, Lola Ade-John, Tahir Mamman, and Abdullahi Gwarzo were among those relieved of their positions in Women Affairs, Tourism, Education, and Housing and Urban Development, respectively.
