Carabao Cup Blow Frank Onyeka’s Fitness In Doubt For Aston Villa Showdown

Coventry City will assess Nigeria international Frank Onyeka ahead of Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round clash with Aston Villa as the midfielder races to recover from an injury sustained in the club’s heavy defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Onyeka was forced off during Coventry’s 5-0 home loss to Brighton on Sunday after struggling with an injury. He was replaced by Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi with 18 minutes remaining as Coventry endured another disappointing Premier League outing.

The midfielder’s availability will be closely monitored ahead of the visit of Aston Villa, with Coventry already facing several selection concerns.

Another Nigerian international, Taiwo Awoniyi, will miss the Carabao Cup encounter after receiving a straight red card during Sunday’s defeat. The forward was dismissed in the 53rd minute, leaving manager Frank Lampard with another major selection headache.

Coventry are also expected to be without Josh Eccles, Kaine Kesler-Hayden, Luke Woolfenden and Haji Wright for the third-round tie.

Onyeka’s potential return could therefore provide an important boost to Lampard, particularly with several players unavailable and the manager facing the task of reshaping his midfield for the cup fixture.

The Sky Blues go into the encounter in difficult form, having recorded just one victory in their opening five matches across all competitions this season.
