Paul Ibe, the media aide to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has refuted claims by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde that Atiku remained silent on the January 16 explosion in Ibadan. Ibe clarified that Atiku had promptly expressed condolences less than 24 hours after the incident, conveying empathy for the people and government of Oyo State. Makinde, while appreciating Obi’s visit, highlighted the ongoing investigation into the explosion, attributing it to illegal miners storing explosives in an improper environment. He expressed gratitude to those who reached out, including the President and Obi, but pointedly mentioned that Atiku, his party’s candidate, had not made contact or conveyed sympathies.
In response, Ibe defended Atiku, emphasizing that the former vice president had indeed extended condolences through a widely shared message on January 17. He suggested that perhaps the governor had been too occupied to track media reports accurately.
The incident is set against the backdrop of political tensions, as Atiku has previously attributed his 2023 presidential election defeat to the lack of support from Makinde and four other PDP governors. These governors, known as the G-5, endorsed APC’s President Bola Tinubu in the election.
During the condolence visit, Peter Obi expressed sympathy for the affected families and commended the government’s prompt response to the Ibadan explosion. Additionally, he addressed the economic situation in the country, advocating for a reduction in the federal government’s cost of governance as a necessary sacrifice to uplift the nation. Obi emphasized the need to prioritize critical areas such as education, health, and poverty alleviation.
