RSIEC’s Commissioner for Media and Civic Education, Tamunotonye Tobins, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday. Tobins confirmed that the local government election would proceed as scheduled on August 9, 2025, and reassured the public that the commission is dedicated to ensuring a credible, free, and fair election.
“The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission is pleased to inform all stakeholders, political parties, and citizens of the state that, as part of preparations for the upcoming local government elections, it has received the updated voters register for Rivers State and the list of currently registered political parties in Nigeria from INEC headquarters,” the statement read. “These crucial documents were released to RSIEC on March 13, 2025.”
The statement further emphasized the commission’s commitment to conducting a transparent and fair election on August 9, 2025.
It’s important to note that the state’s House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule, had previously urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the financial activities of the RSIEC. The House called for an inquiry into the commission’s financial transactions over the past year under the leadership of Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd).
