Sources indicate that this decision stems from growing demands among party stakeholders for a restructuring of the PDP to align with the evolving political landscape in Nigeria.

During their first physical meeting of 2025, held in Asaba, Delta State, on January 31st, the governors resolved that the party’s future would be better secured if they took decisive steps to reshape its leadership.

A party insider, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to Vanguard that the governors unanimously agreed on the need to liberate the party from the influence of dominant political figures.

“The governors were united in their resolve to rescue the PDP’s reputation, which has suffered due to prolonged internal conflicts and the ongoing power struggle between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike,” the source disclosed.

The governors reportedly issued a stern warning to Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, urging him to align with the majority’s vision for the party or risk removal.

“If the party is to engage in alliances, it must do so from a position of strength,” the source added.

The governors reinforced their position through a communiqué released after the meeting, highlighting key resolutions:

  1. Insistence on compliance with the Appeal Court ruling directing the National Working Committee (NWC) to swear in Sunday Udeh-Okoye as National Secretary.
  2. Endorsement of the postponement of the South-South Zonal Congress, despite moves by Wike’s allies to proceed with the event.

A National Executive Committee (NEC) member, also speaking anonymously, noted that Wike’s push for the controversial congress was seen as a direct challenge to the governors, particularly those from the South-South.

“They were keen to observe how Damagum and the NWC would respond. The rejection of the Calabar gathering—where Wike’s camp attempted to install Chief Dan Orbih as National Vice Chairman—was a clear statement,” the source revealed.

In response, the PDP leadership has constituted a seven-member caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs in the South-South region.
