DELSUTH Resident Doctors Commence One-Week Warning Strike....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

DELTA STATE, April 26, 2024 – Resident doctors serving at the Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) have initiated a one-week warning strike, citing grievances against the Delta State Government’s alleged indifference towards critical issues impacting patient care and the training of resident doctors.

In a joint statement signed by Dr. Harrison Adja (President), Dr. Maurice Oghenekaro (General Secretary), and Dr. Erhire Clinton Umukoro (Public Relations Officer), the ARD DELSUTH Congress announced the commencement of industrial action as of 8 am on Friday, April 26, 2024.

The doctors raised concerns about the deteriorating state of infrastructure and the presence of outdated and dysfunctional medical equipment crucial for diagnosing and treating various medical conditions. Despite recent renovations, they highlighted ongoing challenges such as non-functioning elevators, plumbing issues, deteriorating fixtures, and malfunctioning air conditioning units and fans, which have significantly hindered their ability to provide quality healthcare within the hospital premises.

Among the outdated equipment mentioned were essential diagnostic and treatment tools such as CT scan machines, MRI scan machines, mammography machines, endoscopy machines, orthopedic equipment, anesthetic machines, ventilators, multiparameter monitors, and electroencephalography machines.

In addition to infrastructure and equipment concerns, the doctors expressed frustration over inadequate power supply and escalating electricity costs supplied to the hospital by BEDC, exacerbated by insufficient financial support from the state government.

Despite their decision to strike, the DELSUTH resident doctors emphasized their commitment to delivering optimal patient care and indicated a willingness to make sacrifices. They called upon all stakeholders to urge the state government to prioritize adequate funding for the highest referral center in Delta State.

“We remain dedicated to our duty of providing quality healthcare to the people of Delta State. However, it is imperative that the state government address the pressing issues affecting our ability to deliver effective medical services,” the statement concluded.
