United States President Joe Biden recently enacted legislation that could lead to the prohibition of TikTok in the US if its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, fails to divest it within a year.

Concerns over national security risks associated with the app have prompted US lawmakers to consider its potential ban, especially amid fears of data access by the Chinese government.

This move aligns with a global trend of countries taking action against TikTok due to various concerns regarding privacy, security, and ethical implications.

Here’s a breakdown of the approaches taken by different nations:

Countries with complete bans:

  1. China: TikTok’s international version is inaccessible within China, where users must use Douyin, subject to strict content control by the Chinese Communist Party.
  2. Senegal: Implemented a complete ban due to allegations of the platform being used for disseminating “hateful and subversive messages.”
  3. Somalia: Officially outlawed TikTok, along with Telegram and 1XBet, an online betting platform.
  4. North Korea: Access to the internet is heavily restricted, and TikTok is not included in the limited list of permitted websites and apps.
  5. Afghanistan: The Taliban government banned TikTok in April 2022, citing concerns about its influence.

Countries with partial bans:

  1. Indonesia: Took action against TikTok Shop due to violations of e-commerce laws.
  2. Kyrgyzstan: Banned TikTok, citing harm to children’s well-being.
  3. Russia: Imposed limitations on content access and considering a complete ban to promote local social media platforms.

Countries with bans on government-owned devices:

  1. Australia, Austria, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, European Union, France, United Kingdom, United States, Ireland, Belgium, Taiwan, Latvia, Malta: These countries have implemented bans or restrictions on government-owned devices due to privacy and security concerns.

As concerns regarding TikTok’s impact continue to grow, governments around the world are taking measures to address these issues, ranging from partial bans to restrictions on government devices.
