Delta State is currently in the grip of tension following the destruction of the Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area, where a brutal attack claimed the lives of sixteen soldiers.

According to reports from Channels TV, suspicions abound that the devastation was a retaliatory strike by some soldiers aggrieved by the loss of their comrades.

This incident has sparked widespread fear among residents, prompting many to flee to the nearby town of Ughelli for safety.

In response to the attack, Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army, has launched an intensive manhunt to track down the perpetrators. Several arrests have already been made in connection with the killings.

Furthermore, the military has bolstered its presence in the area, conducting patrols in the creeks to apprehend those responsible for the heinous act.

The recovery of the soldiers’ bodies early Saturday morning by a joint task force under Major General Abdussalam’s command has further highlighted the brutality of the attack, with reports of beheadings and mutilations.

This tragic incident, which has garnered widespread condemnation, involved senior military officers, including a commanding officer and two majors, whose bodies were discovered near the NDDC jetty in the coastal Delta community.

Following directives from Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, a thorough investigation into the killings has been ordered.

According to reports, the military personnel were ambushed and killed while responding to a distress call amidst a communal crisis between the Okuama and Okoloba communities.

Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, confirmed these details in a statement issued on Saturday, noting that the troops were on a peace mission in the Bomadi Local Government Area when they were surrounded and attacked by community youths.
