Despite Tariff Increase, Power Generation Plummets To 3,383MW....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The recent hike in electricity tariffs by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has not resulted in an improvement in power supply, with on-grid generation plummeting to 3,383 Mega Watts as of 3 pm yesterday……CONTINUE READING

Data from the National Grid posted on the System Operator’s Grid Data Portal revealed that, at 3 pm, only 19 power generation plants were operational. Notably, Azura Power was off-grid despite starting the day at 434MW, and Egbin Power, the largest power plant in the country, was generating only 325MW, well below its daily average supply to the grid of approximately 600MW.

In the new Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2024, effective from January 1, NERC announced an increase in tariffs, stating that consumers would continue to pay the old rate while the government would subsidize the gap, amounting to N1.6 trillion in 2024.

Despite the improved revenue, NERC directed electricity distribution companies (DisCos) to off-take 3,963MW as part of their obligations under the new tariff regime. However, a check on DisCos’ grid energy off-take showed that the eleven DisCos had a load allocation of 3,134MW, falling short of the 3,963MW ordered by NERC.

TCN, in response to the decline in power generation, attributed the situation to a lack of gas supply to power generation companies. The General Manager of Public Affairs at TCN, Ndidi Mbah, stated that the gradual decrease in available generation was due to gas constraints affecting thermal generating companies. This constraint has impacted the amount of bulk power available on the transmission grid, consequently reducing the load distributed to distribution load centers.

In summary, despite the tariff increase and the directive to DisCos to off-take a specified amount of power, the power supply situation has not witnessed improvement, primarily due to challenges related to gas supply to power generation companies, according to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
