According to Maj Gen Edward Buba, the conflict in Mangu originated from an incident of cattle rustling that occurred last Monday in the community. He elaborated that the crisis unfolded due to the killing of a Wagungun man who was riding his motorcycle and collided with cattle on January 22, 2024. An altercation between the herders’ militias and the Wangagu man ensued, resulting in his unfortunate demise.
The situation escalated, leading to a breakdown of law and order in Mangu town and its surrounding areas. In response, the Defence Headquarters has deployed various battlefield enablers to enhance intelligence and strike capability against the involved parties. Maj Gen Edward Buba urged the conflicting factions to exercise restraint and seek peaceful resolutions.
He also provided an overview of military operations in neighboring states, such as Niger State, where troops are actively engaged in operations in Gauraka, Apo Forest, Gyedna/Sabon Wusa, and Garam in Tafa LGA. Additionally, operations were conducted in Numan and Basa in Akwanga and Nasarawa LGAs of Nasarawa State.
Highlighting recent achievements, Maj Gen Edward Buba reported that the Nigerian Army apprehended 94 individuals and arrested 171, including the capture of 43 oil thieves and the liberation of 29 abducted captives. He also emphasized the military’s commitment to countering oil theft, denying allegations of involvement and reporting an estimated value of stolen oil at four hundred and eighty-five million, nine hundred and eighty-three thousand, one hundred and fifty naira.
It’s noteworthy that the governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, had declared a curfew two days ago in response to the crisis in Mangu local government.
