Matawalle made the statement during DICON’s year-end celebration and the Director-General’s Productivity Award ceremony held on Friday in Kaduna.
He highlighted that the recent signing of the DICON Act 2023 by President Bola Tinubu has strengthened the corporation’s role in boosting Nigeria’s defense capabilities.
This legal progress has enhanced DICON’s capacity to significantly contribute to the country’s military strength.
At the event, Matawalle noted that the Ministry of Defence had assigned several key responsibilities to the Director-General of DICON, expressing full confidence in his ability to meet these expectations.
The Minister further emphasized that Nigeria is focusing on local production of arms to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers.
“Any requirements from the military or other security agencies must now come to DICON for supply,” Matawalle said.
He pointed out that previously, Nigeria sent funds abroad, devaluing the currency and driving up the dollar rate due to a lack of productivity plans. However, with the current leadership at DICON, significant progress is being made.
Matawalle commended the advancements at DICON, noting that the corporation has made great strides in meeting the military’s ammunition and equipment needs.
“Today, DICON is able to produce large quantities of ammunition, with a goal of producing 300 million rounds. We will also produce various military equipment such as MRAPs, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), and other tools for the military and paramilitary forces,” he added.
