Amupitan made the disclosure in Abuja during an end-of-tenure appreciation service organised by the Nigerian Baptist Convention for its outgoing president, Israel Akanji, and his wife, Victoria. He said he would not have taken up the role without that spiritual assurance.
Recounting the moment he accepted the appointment, the INEC chairman said he was encouraged by what he described as a clear message from God assuring him not to be afraid, but to trust in divine help and guidance. According to him, that conviction has remained the foundation of his leadership despite the challenges that come with overseeing elections in a complex democratic environment.
He added that faith has sustained him throughout his time in office, expressing confidence that no challenge is beyond God’s power to overcome. Amupitan also called on Nigerians to pray for INEC and the success of the 2027 general election, saying he hopes the next polls will set a new standard.
Reflecting on public service more broadly, he cautioned against taking on responsibilities without a clear sense of purpose, stressing that his experience has taught him the importance of divine direction in leadership.
