During a press briefing in Benin City, Shaibu claimed to have evidence supporting accusations of looting in certain sectors, as well as last-minute borrowing from financial institutions.
He called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and other relevant agencies to investigate the alleged misuse of funds meant for projects such as the Ministry of Roads and Bridges, the ongoing Radisson Hotel project, and last-minute appointments by the outgoing administration.
Shaibu expressed concern, stating, “I have received troubling reports of banks and financial institutions granting last-minute loans to Governor Godwin Obaseki. This is alarming and not done in good faith. I am issuing a stern warning to these institutions: do not grant any loans or financial instruments to Governor Obaseki or any state government official.”
He also alleged that there were plans to siphon state funds through NGOs under the pretense of supporting their projects, warning that such actions threaten the financial stability of Edo State. “I dissociate myself and my office from these dealings,” Shaibu added.
Further, he condemned reports of indiscriminate appointments into the civil and public service, claiming they were being made with inflated grade levels. He described these actions as undermining the integrity of the civil service and perpetuating cronyism.
Shaibu also accused the administration of backdating fresh consultant appointments to justify excessive expenditures and alleged that government properties were being looted from various ministries.
“As Deputy Governor of Edo State, I am calling on the EFCC and ICPC to investigate the massive contract fraud under the supervision of Engr. Ferguson Enabulele and the government. Investigations are underway to uncover the involvement of some engineers in the Ministry, who are alleged to have helped funnel funds into private accounts before converting them into US dollars,” Shaibu said.
