Speaking to journalists after the session, Finance Commissioner Emmanuel Okoebor stated that the revision underscores the administration’s commitment to capital projects and long-term infrastructure development.
“Previously, our budget was ₦675 billion, with recurrent expenditure at 33% and capital expenditure at 67%. The revised budget now allocates approximately 70% to capital projects and 30% to recurrent costs, highlighting Governor Okpebholo’s dedication to infrastructural growth in Edo State,” Okoebor explained.
He added that the capital allocation received the largest boost. “The budget increased by ₦125 billion, representing an 18% rise over the previous budget. Recurrent expenditure rose by ₦12 billion, while capital spending grew by ₦113 billion—a 25% increase in capital and 5% in recurrent expenditure. This clearly demonstrates the government’s prioritization of infrastructure, which will benefit Edo residents. To date, we have completed around 254 km of roadworks across the state, with numerous other projects ongoing.”
Okoebor also noted that the slight increase in recurrent expenditure was necessary to accommodate salary adjustments and new employment initiatives. “Recurrent spending rose by 5% to reflect the increase in the minimum wage and to cover over 1,000 new hires in the hospital management board. Overall, the budget’s ₦125 billion increase includes a 25% rise in capital expenditure, from ₦450 billion to ₦563 billion.”
Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohombamu, confirmed that the revised budget will now be submitted to the Edo State House of Assembly for legislative review and approval.
