Jonathan underscored the pivotal role of electoral integrity in curbing politicians’ tendencies to challenge election results in court. “In my view, 50 percent of those who resort to litigation do so because they perceive electoral malpractice; they believe they were unfairly treated by the electoral management system,” he remarked.
He proposed that conducting elections with integrity and maintaining judicial impartiality could diminish the need for politicians to seek legal recourse.
The former President drew parallels with South Africa, highlighting its robust electoral framework and steadfast judiciary, which collectively discourage unnecessary legal disputes. “In South Africa, the electoral management body and the judiciary stand firm. Hence, if you lose an election, you patiently await the next opportunity without rushing to court,” he elaborated.
Jonathan also commended the Delta State Government for its efforts to enhance the working conditions of judicial officers and its focus on infrastructural development.
He praised Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for his administration’s commitment to continuing projects initiated by previous governments, stressing the importance of continuity in governance for fostering state progress.
The former President cited the new High Court Complex, initiated in 1991 and completed now, as evidence of the state’s dedication to judicial excellence and infrastructural advancement.
He emphasized that such initiatives are vital for Delta State’s growth and development, serving as a blueprint for subsequent administrations to follow suit
