The Commandant of the FCT command, Olusola Odumosu, disclosed this during a press parade on Tuesday, April 30, stating that the suspects had created a fictitious Facebook account in his name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

“I instructed our intelligence and investigation team, along with the Anti-Fraud unit, to identify the culprits behind the fraudulent Facebook account,” said Odumosu. “After seven months of intense pursuit and collaboration with counterparts in Delta and Anambra State Commands, we successfully apprehended the masterminds behind the scam.”

The arrested suspects were identified as Henry Ushie Odep, aged 34, and Emanuel Ushie Odep, aged 23, both from Cross Rivers State.

According to Odumosu, Emmanuel Ushie was apprehended first after being enticed to Abuja, and his cooperation led to the arrest of his elder brother, Henry Ushie Odep, who was found in possession of the phone used for the fake Facebook account in Asaba, Delta State.

“Emmanuel confessed that his brother, Henry, created the fake Facebook account impersonating me immediately after my appointment as the FCT Commandant in August 2023,” revealed Odumosu. “He admitted to facilitating the withdrawal of funds sent to an Opay account through POS machines until his arrest in Abuja.”

Henry admitted to initiating online fraud in 2016 and involving his younger brother in the scheme due to financial pressures. He confessed to defrauding numerous Nigerians through various online scams.

Investigations uncovered that the suspects utilized Opay, moniepoint, and Palmpay accounts for receiving illicit funds, in addition to leveraging accounts belonging to an unwitting individual named Victory Chinagorom.

Henry implicated his acquaintance, Chibuike Okorie, as the person who introduced him to cybercrime. Okorie has reportedly relocated to Kuwait from Nigeria.

The Command affirmed that investigations are ongoing and assured that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with the law once the inquiry is concluded.
