Gathering at the Assembly with placards and chanting solidarity songs, the students aimed to amplify their voices following the heartbreaking incident. The victim, identified as Iyanda Damilola, was serving as a corps member in Ibadan and had been attending his brother Oluwafemi Iyanda’s convocation party in Ogbomoso.
The celebration took a tragic turn amidst a dispute, prompting police intervention during which Damilola was fatally shot. Oluwafemi, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), also sustained gunshot wounds during the altercation.
Recounting the traumatic events, Oluwafemi stated, “We were leaving a lounge when we witnessed policemen firing directly at people to disperse the crowd. My brother was shot in the head and was pronounced dead at the LAUTECH Teaching Hospital.”
During his address to the Assembly Speaker, Adeoye Aribasoye, Adekunle pressed for swift action, demanding, “We call for prompt investigation and justice for Iyanda Damilola, as well as comprehensive medical attention for his brother, who is grappling with deteriorating health due to gunshot injuries. Additionally, we advocate for an end to police brutality in Nigeria.”
In response, Speaker Aribasoye extended heartfelt condolences to the family and denounced the unprofessional conduct of the police. “This senseless killing of a youth from Ekiti State, who was serving his country, is utterly reprehensible. The House will take a decisive stance on this issue during our upcoming session,” he affirmed.
