Distraught families of seven prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members from Akwa Ibom State, who were kidnapped in Zamfara State over four months ago, are grappling with a sense of hopelessness regarding the fate of their children. Among the kidnapped passengers, two were later released, leaving six individuals and the driver in captivity. The abductors, despite having received over N30 million in ransom, are now demanding an additional N70 million for the release of the remaining victims. The families express frustration at what they perceive as insufficient efforts by federal, Akwa Ibom, and Zamfara governments, as well as the NYSC and security operatives, to secure the release of the abducted individuals.
One of the released victims, a male, was initially suspected by the captors and shot in the leg, while a female was released after a payment of N17.2 million ransom. The families have already paid N30.8 million in total, with the hope that the additional ransom would secure the release of all victims. However, the kidnappers’ recent threats to start killing the captives if N70 million is not paid have shattered those hopes.
The families, facing desperation, recently gathered in Uyo for a street march, expressing a mix of anger and appeals to the government and the public for assistance in saving the victims. Some parents blame the transport company for the incident, alleging that warnings were ignored. Despite efforts to contact government officials, including the state governor, the families claim they have received no feedback or assistance.
The situation has left parents and family members distressed, with some unable to attend the gathering due to the deteriorating health conditions of their children still in captivity. The lack of information-sharing by government and security agencies has raised concerns among citizens, with some criticizing the apparent indifference of state leaders.
Calls for the scrapping or review of the NYSC scheme have emerged, with advocates recommending a more responsive approach to the security and economic realities of the country. Concerned stakeholders, including the Ibom Peoples Congress and a former Reps member, have urged a collaborative effort to address the crisis and prevent future occurrences. The National Association of Akwa Ibom State Students suggests deploying graduates within their region of study as a preventive measure.
