He clarified that the vigilante group received local intelligence suggesting that the hunters were transporting arms. As they attempted to search the vehicle, one of the hunters allegedly stabbed a vigilante member with a knife, prompting the group’s reaction.
General Esekhaigbe stated, “The situation in Uromi was not entirely one-sided. When the vigilante group stopped the vehicle, they intended to search it based on information that the occupants might be carrying arms. During the struggle, one of the hunters stabbed a vigilante member, leading to chaos. However, this does not justify the subsequent violence, as taking a life unjustly is unacceptable in our culture.”
He stressed the importance of educating cattle rearers about conducting legitimate business and discouraging suspicious movements. Additionally, he urged community leaders and traditional rulers to establish clear rules for herders before allowing them to graze, ensuring they understand the community’s regulations.
General Esekhaigbe also called on the police to be more proactive in handling such situations, emphasizing the need for community leaders to verify the identities of those entering their areas, especially when linked to cattle rearing.
