Acknowledging the close proximity of Nasarawa to the FCT, the minister emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort to foster the development of both regions.
He stated that discussions would be initiated between the FCTA and the Nasarawa government regarding the establishment of a metro rail line connecting Apo to Keffi and the completion of the road network from Abacha Barracks to Masaka.
Wike highlighted the significance of the metro line, albeit its high cost, and mentioned ongoing efforts to revitalize the metro line, as directed by President Bola Tinubu. He assured that the project would be concluded within the next seven months.
The minister attributed the primary challenge hindering the progress of FCT’s development to a shortage of funds. He noted that numerous projects and contracts had been awarded but remained unexecuted due to inadequate funding.
Wike expressed that the FCT Administration was in the process of identifying major projects with substantial impact capable of stimulating development, which would be funded and completed.
He emphasized that the growth of Abuja was intrinsically linked to initiatives that would positively influence Nasarawa State.
Regarding the development of land for a clean city, a proposal from the Nasarawa government, Wike explained that he could not make a commitment at the moment due to budgetary constraints.
The minister underscored the necessity for a stronger partnership with the Nasarawa government to address security concerns.
In his earlier remarks, Governor Sule conveyed his congratulations to Minister Wike on his appointment as the FCT minister and expressed his intention to discuss matters related to mutual development.
He pointed out that over 40 percent of individuals employed in Abuja reside in Nasarawa State, underscoring the importance of a collaborative approach to development.
Governor Sule mentioned transportation challenges faced by commuters between Abacha Barracks and the border area in Nyanya and thanked the FCT for its road network efforts in the region.
He expressed anticipation that the road would extend to Masaka and detailed the agreed responsibilities, including security provision, streamlining of motor parks, and the construction of a terminal by the Nasarawa government.
