Obasa had been impeached by Assembly members while on vacation in the United States, with allegations of high-handedness and financial misappropriation cited as reasons for his removal. Mojisola Meranda was swiftly elected as his replacement.

However, Obasa rejected the impeachment, arguing that due process was not followed.

On Thursday, he returned with a crowd of supporters, forcefully reclaiming his seat and presiding over a plenary session attended by four lawmakers.

A high-ranking security official, speaking anonymously to Premium Times, disclosed that the Federal Government backed Obasa’s reinstatement, declaring his impeachment illegal.

“Obasa was not properly removed as Speaker, so his impeachment is unlawful. The government cannot support illegality,” the source stated.

He explained that while the lawmakers cited criminal allegations, they failed to give Obasa the opportunity to defend himself.

When reminded that Obasa had already taken legal action and no court ruling had been issued, the official maintained that the government did not need judicial approval to act on what it viewed as a breach of the law.

“The House was on recess when the impeachment happened. Only the legitimate Speaker has the power to reconvene it,” the source emphasized.

Reports suggest that President Bola Tinubu was displeased with Obasa’s removal, as the lawmakers allegedly bypassed party leaders before taking action.

The Governor’s Advisory Council of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) attempted to persuade Tinubu to accept the change, but sources claim the president refused to meet their delegation in Abuja.
